In honor of the Catholic Church's newly canonized saints I am sharing the most recent development in my stylistic exploration of saint art. St. Carlo Acutis - a Eucharistic devote and computer programmer who lived at the turn of the century - felt like the perfect subject for this newest venture. It's still a drawing on black paper with negative space for the background glass, but this time it is in a shadow-box which is lit from the inside by fairy lights. I also used acetate for the glass instead of tissue paper or the like, since it allows more light through and gave me the chance to play around with colors with a bit more freedom. I did this piece to a deadline so was a bit rushed by the time I got to the background, so I still need to work on the blending and positioning of that layer, but it turned out alright as a first attempt. (Luckily, I can take it apart easily - working with layers is fantastic). I'm also still figuring out how to capture an image properly around the reflectiveness of glass... and I hope the strobes aren't too obnoxious, but it makes it easier to capture the effect of having it lit up.
